code for the people

,

Nearly three years ago, we set out to make a short documentary. Today, I finally get to share it.

I first met Bao Nguyen in Newport News, Virginia in 2008. When my career as a community organizer didn’t work out, he was the one who suggested I could film at a rally. After the campaign, we briefly worked on a documentary about what happens to political organizers after a campaign has ended.

I kept up with Bao over the years, always hoping we might be able to collaborate again.

When it came time to find a director, the first call I made was to Bao.

If you know his work (Be Water, The Greatest Night in Pop, BTS: The Return, The Stringer), you know he brings incredible depth to every story he tells. He was immediately enthusiastic about the topic, and we got to work.

The result is “Code for the People.”

The film tells the story of how a forked blogging tool became WordPress, now powering over 43% of the internet, and why the people building open source tools matter more than ever.

After nearly three years of hard work, I’m so grateful we can finally share this with the world.

Making a film is a collective effort. In many ways, that is the theme of the film itself.

As we continue to live in uncertain times, open source and the people who build these tools are more important than ever.
